The Stryker Order That Taught Me to Check Everything (Even the Surgical Gowns)

I've been handling supply orders for a surgery center for seven years. I've personally made—and documented—about $8,000 in mistakes from sloppy ordering. This one from March 2024 is still the one that makes me cringe.

Back when our center was still two rooms at the back of a clinic

I was handed the job of outfitting a new outpatient surgery center. We're small—two ORs, four recovery bays, and a supply closet that doubles as my office. But we had real surgical needs: Stryker hospital beds for recovery, basic Stryker surgical equipment (forceps, retractors, an ultrasonic aspirator), a cryosurgery device for dermatology procedures, plus a biosafety cabinet for handling tissue samples. And, of course, surgical gowns.

The Stryker beds ended up being the easy part. We chose AC-powered units with foldable side rails, which fit our narrow recovery bays. The surgical equipment list was straightforward too—standard forceps, retractors, and a small aspirator. The trouble started with the items I thought I understood.

The first mistake: thinking 'standard' means the same thing to everyone

In my first few years of procurement, I made the classic specification error: assuming 'standard' meant the same thing to every vendor. That's exactly what happened here. I typed up the order and listed 'cryosurgery device' and 'biosafety cabinet' as if they were two flavors of the same thing. They look similar from the outside—both metal boxes with screens and doors. The reality is they do completely different jobs. A cryosurgery device freezes tissue with liquid nitrogen or argon. A biosafety cabinet filters air to protect the user and the samples from contamination.

Cryosurgery devices aren't all the same either. Some use probes that need to be refilled with liquid nitrogen. Others use compressed argon gas. If I'd ordered the wrong one, we'd have had a box of metal that only works with gas lines we don't have. In my experience, the more you know about the utility requirements, the better the quote you'll get.

I didn't know that then. I just assumed they were part of the same 'surgical support equipment' category. Our Stryker rep caught the confusion when she asked, 'Do you want a cabinet with HEPA filtration, or is this for cryosurgery?' I panicked, guessed, and chose the wrong one.

Okay, I didn't choose the wrong one entirely. I said 'both' to be safe, but the quote came back with only the cryosurgery device. The biosafety cabinet was listed as 'omitted pending specification.' I didn't notice until later.

The moment I realized what a surgical gown really is

The shipment arrived in two phases. The Stryker hospital beds came first—they were exactly what we expected. Then came the surgical equipment and the gowns. I was so proud of myself for remembering gowns at all that I'd just clicked 'standard surgical gowns.' That's when I learned what a surgical gown actually is.

What is a surgical gown? It's a sterile barrier designed to prevent the transfer of microorganisms between the surgical team and the patient. It's not a big napkin. There are AAMI performance levels from 1 to 4:

  • Level 1: Minimal fluid resistance, fine for basic care
  • Level 2: Low fluid resistance, for minor procedures like biopsies
  • Level 3: Moderate to high fluid resistance, for most general surgery
  • Level 4: High fluid resistance, for trauma or orthopedic cases

For an orthopedic procedure you generally want Level 3 or 4. I had ordered Level 1 examination gowns, which are fine for a quick physical exam but dangerous in an operating room.

I said, 'we need surgical gowns.' The sales rep heard 'we need some kind of gowns.' That's a classic communication failure. We were using the same words but meaning different things—and I discovered it when the lead surgeon opened a box and asked why our new surgical gowns were see-through.

We did not use those gowns. $1,400 straight to the trash, plus a 10-day wait for the correct ones.

The surprising part: Stryker treated us like a real customer

Here comes the part I didn't expect. When I called about the gown issue, I was ready to fight. I figured the rep would say, 'Well, you ordered Level 1,' and wash her hands of us. Instead, she said, 'Okay, let's fix it.' She expedited the replacement order and even sent a one-page guide on gown levels so we'd never make the same mistake again. She also verified that we had the right biosafety cabinet specification and the correct cryosurgery device for our derm cases.

At one point I mentioned I wasn't sure why the original quote had the biosafety cabinet missing. She explained it was flagged for confirmation because, in her words, 'Small doesn't mean unimportant. We just want to make sure you're buying what you actually need.'

I know that sounds like a sales pitch, but it didn't feel like one. It felt like she was genuinely checking that a small customer didn't waste their budget. To be fair, we still paid for everything. There was no discount, no free upgrade. But the service quality was a world apart from other vendors who had ignored my emails when our order was under $10,000.

What I'd do differently (and what I hope you'll do too)

If you're in a similar position, especially if you're a small clinic or surgery center, here are a few things I learned the hard way:

  • Write down every specification, not just brand names. 'Stryker hospital beds' isn't enough. You need the model, the options, the power type, the weight capacity.
  • Ask what 'standard' includes. That one word caused most of our problems. Standard to us was 'good enough.' Standard to a vendor might be 'basic, no upgrades.'
  • Check gown levels against your procedure mix. The AAMI levels aren't optional. A Level 1 gown will not protect you during a procedure with fluid exposure.
  • Treat a biosafety cabinet as an engineered system, not a box. It has airflow, filtration, and certification requirements. Same for a cryosurgery device—you need to know the gas supply and probe compatibility.

Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), medical device companies can't make misleading claims about what a product does or guarantee outcomes. Stryker's rep didn't pretend their equipment was magic. She gave us the specs and let the data do the talking. I respect that.

Also worth remembering: if someone markets a disposable surgical gown as 'recyclable' or 'eco-friendly,' ask for proof. The FTC Green Guides require environmental claims to be substantiated. You don't want to base your purchasing on marketing language that falls apart under scrutiny.

I'm not 100% sure why some vendors treat small orders as training wheels instead of real business. Maybe they're overwhelmed by big accounts. But I learned that the vendor's attitude matters more than their logo. At least, that's been my experience with Stryker so far. They're a giant, but they still gave our little center a fair shake. That's why we'll keep using them for our surgical equipment and hospital beds.

The mistake cost us about $1,400 and set us back a week and a half. It also taught me to slow down and ask 'what does this actually do?' before hitting send. If you're about to place an order for a biosafety cabinet, a cryosurgery device, or even a stack of surgical gowns, I hope you ask that question too.

You'll save yourself the embarrassment—and the trash bag full of unusable gowns.
